New product feature for municipal fleets aids cities in safe, efficient snow removal
Lexington, Kentucky (May 17, 2022) — Rubicon Technologies, LLC (“Rubicon”), a digital marketplace for waste and recycling and provider of innovative software-based solutions for businesses and governments worldwide, today announced that it has launched a new product feature to optimize municipal snow removal.
RUBICONSmartCity™ is a proprietary, cloud-based technology suite that helps city governments run faster, smarter, and more effective waste, recycling, and heavy-duty municipal fleet operations. This new product feature from RUBICONSmartCity drives innovation in government snow removal operations, bringing the next generation of technology to snow plows.
Using Rubicon’s intuitive in-cab interface and desktop portal, cities can set priority streets, view all snow removal vehicles at once, provide digital turn-by-turn directions to drivers, and track route progress and completion. Rubicon also delivers route creation and optimization using its powerful high-density routing software. All of this helps to ensure that city streets get plowed efficiently and effectively during storms.
“Safe and efficient snow removal is one of the most pressing municipal management and safety priorities of many cities across the United States throughout the winter season,” said Nate Morris, Chairman and CEO of Rubicon. “Rubicon’s pioneering snow removal technology is already improving snow removal services for a number of cities across the country, and I am excited to see its expansion in the coming months, ahead of the next winter season.”
One of Rubicon’s first snow removal pilot partners was the City of Kansas City, Missouri, population 486,000. RUBICONSmartCity’s snow removal technology powered the City’s 300 snow vehicles throughout the 2021-2022 snow season, through more than four major snow events. Every snow removal driver in the City used a tablet equipped with Rubicon’s snow removal software that showed their entire route, including street priority.
“In Kansas City we are constantly striving to improve public services—and with them, quality of life for our residents,” said Michael Shaw, Director of Public Works for the City of Kansas City, Missouri. “Having partnered with Rubicon for three years prior to the 2021-2022 snow season, we were confident that we would experience similar positive results, and we were not wrong. Efficient snow removal positively impacts public safety and keeps our great city moving in the winter months. We believe this is an investment that will accomplish both of those goals in the coming years.”
RUBICONSmartCity also powers Kansas City’s solid waste collection operations. Through its work with Rubicon, the city’s Solid Waste Division has a unified view for all solid waste issues logged at the curb, and can now easily schedule new services, optimize routes, dispatch trucks, and communicate directly with customers in real-time. The Solid Waste Division wanted to become a more proactive branch of city government, and made investments in new technology and processes with Rubicon to make this vision a reality.
“Since partnering with Rubicon, the City of Kansas City, Missouri has experienced over $2,000,000 in taxpayer savings and a nearly 20 percent improvement in citizen satisfaction related to solid waste collection,” said Michael Allegretti, Chief Strategy Officer at Rubicon. “This is the sort of impact that we hope to replicate for the citizens of Kansas City as the Department of Public Works uses our new application to power its snow removal operations in the years to come. By bringing solid waste collection and snow removal onto one platform, the opportunities to drive better outcomes for communities are significant.”
In 2021, RUBICONSmartCity was listed in Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Awards in the “AI & Data” and “Spaces, Places, and Cities” categories, and it won the Capital Finance International (CFI) Best SaaS Smart City Solutions Award. RUBICONSmartCity and the City of Santa Fe are featured in the new Amazon documentary series, Climate Next, now streaming on Amazon Prime.
