Atlanta, Georgia (December 16, 2019) — Rubicon, a Certified B Corporation, today announced that it worked with Closed Loop Organics and B Green Services to divert more than a ton of waste away from landfills and into recycling streams at the one-day “Afternoon in the Country” event in Atlanta, Georgia.

The diversion and sustainability activity happened at Les Dames d’Escoffier’s annual “Afternoon in the Country” culinary event that supports life-changing scholarship programs and educational grants for women in the culinary arts and agriculture, as well as support for other food-related philanthropic efforts. Rubicon partnered with Closed Loop Organics and B Green Services on developing a plan for waste, recycling, composting, and overall sustainability for the event.

A team of Rubicon volunteers worked with Les Dames d’Escoffier to help all of the attendees at Foxhall Resort in Douglasville, Georgia process and dispose of their waste properly.

For the one-day event, a total waste stream of 1.87 tons was generated. Rubicon, Closed Loop Organics, and B Green Services were able to take 1.15 tons of that waste and divert it into recycling or compost streams; a diversion rate of 61%. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. national average for diversion via recycling and composting is approximately 34%.

“Rubicon’s mission is to end waste, and we work with global, national, and local companies on that challenge,” said Ryan Cooper, Waste Diversion Manager and Organics Recycling Lead at Rubicon. “As a society, we need to advance the widespread adoption of circular solutions that create value from materials already in circulation, which will help to convert waste generated from the outdated take-make-waste model into valuable resources and useful products.”

Closed Loop Organics out of Milton, Georgia served as the organics hauling partner and B Green Services out of Mableton, Georgia served as the waste and recycling hauling partner with Rubicon on the project.

Closed Loop Organics has diverted an average of 2,600 tons of food waste and compostable material per year since 2009. “Our mission is to continue to reduce the amount of waste that is ending up in landfills. The process begins with educating the businesses of Georgia about how to enhance their sustainability initiative by composting,” said Genine Hawkins, Director of Operations at Closed Loop Organics. “Closed Loop Organics has cultivated a strong relationship with Rubicon in an effort to reach more establishments in our area. We are committed to providing the best composting service available in the Metro Atlanta area and beyond. We will not stop until composting is expected instead of suggested as a form of waste removal.”

“The Atlanta Chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier is a smart and sophisticated group of women leaders in the hospitality industry, tying into sustainability and clean cooking wherever we can,” said Tamie Cook, Les Dames d’ Escoffier Atlanta President, 2020. “A significant part of our mission is our ‘Green Tables’ initiative, which aims to promote community health and well being, and foster leadership in the sustainable food movement. Reducing waste is paramount to this mission, and we are thrilled to have Rubicon as a partner and sponsor of our event.”

“It was such an honor to be a strategic partner and collaborator in helping the recycling efforts for the Afternoon in the Country event,” said Emil Bekyarov, Owner and President of B Green Services. “An event like this is a great example of how we should look at different ways to recycle, leverage food waste for composting, and think about sustainability as a whole at all events and gatherings.”

Rubicon was a Diamond level sponsor of the event.
