At Rubicon®, Earth Month is a time for celebration as we flex our environmental muscles and pull out all the stops to do right by Mother Earth.
This year’s Earth Month events took place under the banner of Rubicon.org, the company’s official community and giving platform. At a local level, Rubicon.org supports charities and social organizations that are working to address the problems faced by disadvantaged communities across the country. All of Rubicon’s charitable work, local and national, is rooted in our conviction that a world without waste is possible, and our team is dedicated to activities that get us closer to that goal.
Here is what Rubicon employees have been getting up to this Earth Month:
Volunteer Events
Volunteer events were put on hold last year due to the onset of the COVID-19 public health emergency in the United States. This year, with plenty of PPD in hand, Rubicon’s Earth Month volunteer events were back.
Sweep the Hooch
Rubicon employees in the Atlanta region took part in the annual one-day “Sweep the Hooch” volunteer activity organized by the non-profit Chattahoochee RiverKeeper. More than 1,200 volunteers, including numerous Rubicon employees, came together at 54 cleanup sites to collect 35 tons of trash and recycling from the river. Of this waste, the non-profit was able to recycle 2.76 tons.

GrowNYC Urban Farm
Rubicon employees in New York City took part in a day of urban farming on Governors Island in support of GrowNYC, a non-profit that works to improve New York City’s quality of life through environmental programs that transform communities block by block and empower all New Yorkers to secure a clean and healthy environment for future generations.
Rubicon volunteers weeded raised beds, planted potatoes, and trimmed radishes. Used primarily as a teaching farm for local schools prior to COVID-19, the farm now produces hundreds of pounds of fresh produce every week, with much of this produce donated to greenmarkets across the city.

Affinity Group Charity Competition
This year, in honor of Earth Month, Rubicon’s six affinity groups—the African American Affinity Group, Asian American and Pacific Islander Affinity Group, Latin American and Caribbean Affinity Group, LGBTQ+ Affinity Group, Women in Leadership Affinity Group, and Veterans Affinity Group—came together to choose one charity each that they believed most related to the “restore our earth” Earth Day theme.
Leaders from each of these groups then presented live to the company on April 19 to encourage their fellow employees to put their money where their environmental mouth is and root for their cause. This friendly “competition” is still ongoing, and the winning affinity group (defined by the group that solicited the most individual donations) will be announced internally in the coming weeks.
