On May 2 and 3, 2008, Myanmar was heavily battered by severe tropical Cyclone Nargis. The area most devastated was the Irrawaddy Delta, a low-lying region located on the tip of the country's western coast.
Some sources estimate that the death toll within Myanmar has now risen above 22,000, with an additional 41,000 people still missing. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands are left homeless, and without electricity or water. The impact of Cyclone Nargis also caused heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides in parts of Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh.
The United Nations began distributing food in Yangon as it ramped up efforts to respond to the looming needs in the southern coastal regions of Myanmar. Other humanitarian organizations stand poised to send in aid as it is approved by the local government.
The Rubicon Team and all of our Atlas schools worldwide join together in wishing the extended families and friends of our colleagues at The International School of Yangon our deepest sympathies and sincerest best wishes. Our thoughts are also extended to the countless more that will be affected in the months and weeks ahead as the country begins its recovery.
